  4.     Right-wing groups in West Germany have grown increasingly
  5. visible recently, but authorities last week drew the line at just
  6. how far such movements may go. Bonn banned the 170-member neo-Nazi
  7. National Assembly political group, confiscating ammunition, knives
  8. and swastikas during nationwide raids on offices and members'
  9. apartments. "This strike against neo-Nazis should be seen as an
  10. unmistakable warning signal," said Interior Minister Friedrich
  11. Zimmermann. "West Germany will not be a playing field for
  12. right-wing extremism."

  14.     The raids came only ten days after the new-right party, the
  15. Republicans, won a startling 7.5% of the vote in West Berlin city
  16. elections. Zimmermann said the ban on the National Assembly did not
  17. affect the Republican Party, because it is not considered
  18. "extremist." As for the National Assembly group, leader Michael
  19. Kuhnen, who remained free despite the ban, announced the formation
  20. of a new neo-Nazi party.
